We are looking for an energetic and experienced Vessel Manager – Gas Tankers for our client, an established international ship-management company in the maritime sector. The Technical Superintendent will manage the technical operations of assigned gas tankers on behalf of shipowner clients, ensuring that the vessels operate safely, reliably and cost-effectively in accordance with regulatory requirements and agreed management standards.
The ideal candidate will have prior sailing experience on gas tankers, together with at least two years of shore-based experience managing gas tanker vessels. The successful candidate should possess strong technical expertise, commercial awareness and the ability to build effective working relationships with shipowner clients, vessel crews and internal stakeholders.
Job Description
- Oversee the day-to-day technical management of assigned gas tankers on behalf of shipowner clients. Ensure vessels are operated and maintained in accordance with the ship-management agreement, company procedures and applicable regulatory requirements.
- Act as the key technical point of contact for shipowner clients, providing timely updates on vessel condition, operational performance, technical issues and expenditure.
- Monitor planned maintenance, machinery performance, technical defects and repair requirements, providing guidance and support to vessel crews.
- Conduct vessel inspections and ensure that deficiencies and corrective actions are followed through and closed promptly.
- Prepare annual vessel budgets and dry-docking budgets for client review and approval. Monitor operating expenditure against approved budgets and provide explanations for variances and unplanned costs. Plan and oversee dry-dockings, major repairs, upgrades and vessel modification projects in consultation with shipowner clients.
- Coordinate with vessel crews, marine and crewing teams, procurement colleagues, shipyards, equipment manufacturers and service providers.
- Ensure compliance with class, flag, statutory, safety, environmental and company requirements. Review and investigate technical incidents, machinery failures and operational issues, ensuring effective corrective and preventive actions.
- Prepare regular technical and performance reports for shipowner clients and internal management.
- Support client meetings, vessel performance reviews and technical discussions as required. Travel overseas and attend vessels when necessary.
Qualifications
- Marine Engineering qualification, Certificate of Competency or an equivalent technical qualification. Prior seafaring experience on gas tankers is essential.
- At least two years of shore-based experience in the technical management of gas tankers is essential.
- Previous experience working with a third-party ship manager will be an advantage.
- Strong knowledge of gas tanker operations, vessel maintenance, machinery systems, dry-docking, technical budgeting and regulatory compliance.
- Good commercial awareness with the ability to manage vessel expenditure within approved budgets.
- Strong planning, analytical, troubleshooting and decision-making skills.
- Strong communication and stakeholder-management skills.
- Proficiency in spoken Mandarin is required, as the role involves regular liaison with Mandarin-speaking vessel crews and clients. Able and willing to travel when required.
