We are looking for a highly motivated and experienced Head of Sustainability for one of our global shipping clients. This role covers three main areas of responsibility: developing and driving global corporate sustainability goals, strategic development and daily procurement of fuel and lubricants for the fleet, and leading decarbonization efforts across land-based operations and vessels. The delivery of these responsibilities is through the management of two distinct departments—Global Sustainability & ESG, and Marine Fuels & Services—and the ability to leverage synergies between them.
The ideal candidate will possess strong stakeholder management skills to align various operating divisions and regional offices to enable effective implementation of corporate sustainability initiatives. Familiarity with global regulatory requirements and local marine fuel regulators is also essential to navigate the ongoing fuel transition.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Sustainability
- Lead the Global Sustainability & ESG department, a corporate function responsible for overseeing group-wide sustainability strategy and implementation.
- Drive improvements in external ESG ratings and sustainability performance assessments (e.g. Ecovadis).
- Monitor developments in IMO, international, and national regulations impacting ESG obligations and assess implications.
- Develop long-term sustainability strategies and implement tactical initiatives to ensure sustainable operations.
- Align and manage internal and external stakeholders globally to ensure smooth execution of ESG programs.
- Initiate and coordinate global community upliftment projects to amplify the organization’s positive social impact.
Marine Fuels
- Manage the Marine Fuels & Services department, responsible for procurement and fulfilment of fuel, lubricants, and supporting services.
- Develop comprehensive fuel strategies that consider trading profiles, bunkering hubs, and pricing of conventional and alternative fuels.
- Engage with regulators to support and advocate for improved operations and supply of marine fuels, including low-emission alternatives.
- Negotiate and secure reliable, cost-effective fuel and lubricant supply for global shipping operations.
- Establish and enforce procedures for quality control, quantity verification, and overall fuel management.
- Oversee services such as sludge disposal, water replenishment, lab tests, and fuel forensics investigations.
- Provide input on newbuilding and charter party design from a fuel efficiency and emissions standpoint.
- Support the operational adoption of low-emission alternative fuels for dual-fuel vessels entering the fleet.
Decarbonization
- Track and interpret emissions-related regulations from IMO, regional, and local authorities.
- Maintain and refine a decarbonization roadmap through 2050, translating it into actionable strategies that guide fleet renewal and deployment.
- Identify and implement energy-efficient technologies for both existing fleets and newbuilds.
- Evaluate alternative fuel options in terms of cost, technical feasibility, and operational impact.
- Collaborate on vessel design concepts for alternative fuels and optimize dual-fuel ship designs for operational cost-effectiveness.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Graduate or post-graduate degree with a strong track record in at least two or more of the following:
- Sustainability strategy or project implementation
- Fuels, maritime or port operations/management
- Corporate or regulatory roles in international-facing industries
- Management consultancy
- Strong leadership and team management skills, with experience leading cross-functional teams and influencing senior stakeholders.
- Minimum of 10 years of relevant industry experience.
