We are looking for an experienced and proactive Vessel Manager / Senior Vessel Manager with strong hands-on experience in managing Gas / Ethylene carriers for one of our global ship management clients.
The ideal candidate should have strong sailing and/or shore-based experience on Ethylene carriers, LPG carriers, semi-refrigerated gas carriers or VLGCs. He/she should be technically sound, practical in vessel management, and able to guide shipboard teams on onboard maintenance, troubleshooting and safe gas carrier operations.
This role will involve managing mature gas tonnage with high owner expectations on vessel operation, maintenance standards and cost control. The successful candidate should therefore be resilient, hands-on, stable in employment history and confident in managing technically demanding vessels over the long term. This position will be based in the UK.
Responsibilities:
• Responsible for the safe, efficient and environmentally conscious operation of assigned Gas / Ethylene carriers.
• Ensure vessel compliance with company procedures, SMS, ISM Code, IGC Code, class, flag state, port state, terminal, charterer and other relevant international regulations.
• Supervise daily operational activities of assigned vessels, including cargo operations, navigation safety, machinery performance, planned maintenance, defect follow-up and overall vessel condition.
• Provide practical technical and operational guidance to Masters, Chief Engineers and senior officers, especially on gas cargo systems, onboard maintenance and troubleshooting.
• Monitor and support safe cargo operations, including loading, discharging, cooldown, purging, inerting, gas freeing, tank preparation, cargo conditioning and pressure / temperature management where applicable.
• Drive effective onboard maintenance and reduce unnecessary dependency on shore-based support where safe and practical.
• Manage and keep management / owners updated on all technical matters, vessel operations, budgetary performance, defects, incidents and risk areas of assigned vessels.
• Ensure vessel certification, statutory documentation, class records and technical records are properly maintained and kept up to date.
• Prepare vessels for inspections, audits and surveys, including class, flag, PSC, terminal, charterer, CDI / SIRE and owner inspections.
• Conduct vessel visits, condition inspections and audits as required.
• Support planning and execution of dry-docking, repairs, major maintenance and technical projects within approved budget limits.
• Lead or support investigations into incidents, near misses, cargo-related issues, machinery failures and non-conformities, ensuring corrective actions are implemented effectively.
• Maintain strong working relationships with vessel owners, charterers, terminals, class, flag, service providers, shipboard staff and internal support teams.
Qualifications:
• Chief Engineer’s or Master’s Certificate of Competency, preferably Class 1 / Unlimited.
• Significant sailing experience on Ethylene carriers, LPG carriers, semi-refrigerated gas carriers or VLGCs.
• Prior shore-based experience as Vessel Manager, Technical Superintendent, Gas Superintendent or similar will be highly preferred.
• Strong practical knowledge of gas carrier operations, including cargo handling, cargo conditioning, reliquefaction systems, cargo compressors, cargo pumps, ESD systems, inerting, purging, gas freeing and tank preparation.
• Experience with Ethylene carriers will be a strong advantage.
• Experience managing mature or technically demanding gas vessels will be advantageous.
• Strong understanding of ISM, ISPS, MLC, SOLAS, MARPOL, IGC Code, class requirements and gas carrier industry standards.
• Good commercial awareness with the ability to manage vessel operating costs within approved budgets.
